I think it is very important to separate in "open education": "learning materials" and "learning activities".

"research based design process" - i wonder if there is an article out about it?

@pe3 yes. T. Leinonen, T. Toikkanen, and K. Silfvast, “Software as hypothesis: Research-based design methodology,” in The proceedings of Participatory Design Conference 2008. ACM, 2008.

Yeah open education sure can mean a lot of things. I just stepped out of a lecture at the open university, under the Helsinki University. Is it within the realm of open education, and if not, why not? Just sign up for a course and you're in, anyone can register! It even uses the word open; how is this different from other sorts of things that are considered open education?

I think the people (incl me) who talk about open education could also promote studia generalia, open lectures at the universities (physically) and Tieteen päivät. Or can someone come up with a reason to not approve this sort of activity?

(i'm trying to lure someone to claim that openness must involve publishing on the open web)

I must admit publicly that i'm shouting from behind the bush; i don't follow open education too closely, i'm sure older, more stabilized forms of learning than wikis, facebook and neo-openness are also referred to a lot, if one dives deeper into the discussion about open education.
