@juhak: I remember the electric car community discussing their car project as a service at some point.

really good article by Gerhard Fischer "Meta—Design: Beyond User-Centered and Participatory Design" link to pdf
I would be careful at relying on local governments as the source of funding, we are notoriously risk averse institutions, and there is still a great perception of risk in investing in open design processes.

@matnel Yep. This of course is at the very core of open source issues.
Again, going back on previous stuff, a lot (certainly not all) of business, funding, etc. is based on creating new tools, software, etc. for proprietary purposes, companies don't e.g. see it fair to help others by releasing stuff or contributing to OS projects...even if it could help them (and their competitors); but the same is true for other (non.company) funding too.

@pe3 thx for the wake up ping, I was on the move this morning.
open money and non-monetary collaboration coming up in every corner, you say. Doesn't suprise at all. Where is open there is self-organizing ande where is self-organizing there is no role for traditional money.

@troppone I'm a novice with SNA still =) @Reinikainen as @matnel said, Ucinet is de facto standard software (like Photoshop in digital imaging), but it has quite high learning curve on the beginning. For OS X, there is Agna which is quite user-friendly. One quite comprehensive list of SNA tools is in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_n...
