Panel Discussion: Envisioning Openness – Concrete Proposals
posted to #OPEN2009 06.11.2009 (en)
@hyvaelama: how about an eCar-like approach to dismantling openly e.g. healthcare and rebuild to be more people-centric and humane
#open2009 in 140 chars: create movements, not tools; open should be the default, closed should be an option; wikiplanning; 5* for organizers

With my point to copyleft and FabLab was that there should be a penalty on closedness, f.ex. a property tax on immaterial rights. I'm trying to draft tools to answer @hyvaelama's wish for capturing value.
hi there... could someone be so kind and name (or introduce) the panel participants?
(just joined the video stream...)

one fundamental paradigm shift in health care will be the shift to more preventive healthcare (as opposed to treating conditions after they have emerged). this is a huge shift which has a lot to do with "lifestyle" issues. it will be backed up with the increasing understanding of the how the human body works, for example in the field of genetics and, for example, how genes are represented in the individual.
@viilee I agree, at least in Finland the preventive healthcare actions are almost inexistant (IMHO)

@andreuchis yes. pohjois-karjala-projekti is one big public health project: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pohjois-...
human's health is his/her own, system has to support that human empowers him/herself through controlling and flourishing his/her health

@viilee yes what? they are nonexistent or they exist? maybe they exist but they have NEVER touch my experience (last time yesterday with my 5 year old daughtr in the dermatologist)
andreuchis commented on posted to #OPEN2009 06.11.2009 (en)
@andreuchis wait, no preventive healthcare in Finland? I see plenty of it, but of course it doesn't happen in hospitals (hospitals are for sick ppl). It happens in schools, kindergardens, between ppl themselves, football fields, television, magazines and so forth.
@andreuchis well, i don't know. though i was told by a doctor friend that the situation is not that bad.
But @hyvaelama is right, everyone would benefit from at least having the same information available to oneself as the health care institutions have of us.
@mace @viilee I stand on my opinion in the "health care system" in this country does not include enough prevention actions

Information only in finnish, But there is eKatselu, eResepti, and other e-projects on helthcare on the way: http://www.stm.fi/vireilla/kehittamis...
@hyvaelama suggests bottom-up movement in Mikkeli, where there a will to do social media (& related phenomena) -based actions is in the strategy
Great, @reinikainen mentioned the threat to politicians, not unlike what has been suggested by e.g. Axel Bruns
administration has the power to solve the big problems but often focuses on the small problems whereas designers nowadays want to work on the big problems but really have only the power to work on the small ones.
solution: designers should start wanting to become administrators and managers (and i'm completely serious with this! look, no smiley!!).
there are many inspiring stories regarding this. one is the story of jaime lerner, a brazilian architect who became the mayor of curitiba and had a very unique way of running the city through which they developed an unique local transport system which is cheap and works very well.
here's a link to jaime lerner's presentation at TED: http://www.ted.com/talks/jaime_lerner...
Arrived back from shop to see the last minutes of panel discussion. I think the limits and possibilities of openness are becoming more clear. The big issue is how to get the huge silent majority to become a part of this? Will it lead to the escape of the pioneers into some kind of new gray zones? How much empathy is open source loaded with? Is there a real and deep concern for a better society and wellbeing of people?
