I'm reading all kinds of trend reports and analysis of global politics and economy etc etc. Everyone says basically the same things. What if we started to do something completely unique? Or is the global system so strong that you need to conform to survive? Is there room for true differences and thus innovativeness? Or is innovation just a relative term?

Yeah, there is room for difference. Try economic freedom, a.k.a laissez-faire capitalism. Estonia did quite well with it, but they are slipping.
