F-secure doesn't seem to give any sources to their claims that iPhones send the location data to Apple.
There is a guy who discovered the db months ago (and even mentions it in a book published last year) and he strongly disagrees with most of the points in the original o'reilly article: https://alexlevinson.wordpress.com/20...
@Jusso I believe they do send (as they clearly say) but it has nothing to do with this "consolidated" database. I think that for wifi location storage they need to know accurate location, so this data is purely locations from GPS unit.
Consolidated.db is used to provide location information to apps on a phone, just like Alex Levinson states.
ref overreaction: indeed it seems to be (though there are no concrete details yet of what exactly is sent and how it's correlated [or not] with invidual phones on Apples end).
someone (tm) should install a packet logger on their phone and then spend the time to sift through the logs for the location info to see what exactly is sent and where, that would answer one half of the question.
