Sunday survey: your preferred desktop environment (Gnome, KDE...) ? Not that I want to start a flame, but I had to ask, sooner or later ;)

Gnome here.

Me too: I'm still in my "Gnome phase" (after being a lot of years on KDE)...

I've tested Gnomea once in a while, but I've always come back to KDE. I also prefer XFCE over Gnome if needed. The QT license change to LGPL when Nokia bought Trolltech made KDE even more attractive. And I feel KDE has been advancing better than Gnome. Even the "bad" KDE 3 to 4 switch has made things things better slowly. KDE 4.2 actually feels usable again VS KDE 3.5.x.

just my personal opinions. Not flamewar intended.

At the moment, Gnome. I'd rather use KDE, but KDE4 is just too unstable and has a few features I hate. Hopefully they'll get it into a usable state soon.

Ion3. It's leightweight, fast, clutter-free, leaves as much screen real estate for applications as possible. And the most important reason: I prefer keyboard over mouse, and in that sense Ion truly rocks.

Oh, BTW, I don't know if Ion really counts as a desktop environment, but I'm sure it qualifies into this survey.

Gnome, as it's the default in Ubuntu (and was in Fedora). ATM too lazy to start shopping around.

Mostly KDE, but occationally Gnome. However I just found LXDE and on a BeagleBoard it is blazing fast

I'm a Gnome fan but I prefer using Fluxbox environment... I find it faster on doing everyday actions..

What do you think about this article of Bruce Byfield: Gnome vs. KDE: Whis has the Evolutionary Advantage??

I'm not sure I agree completely with the article, but the way of KDE sounds more like the way of Linux even though whole kernel has never been rewritten completely but it's components have been if needed. Kernel devs don't mind breaking the backward compatibility if needed also.

Tested also LXDE and it seemed good for older and ligher devices. Cannot imagine using that with modern workstation, though.

@trm The beginning of that article refers to this article, which then says quite harsh words about KDE 4. Along the lines that yes, KDE had the courage to evolve, but alas it evolved to a bad direction.

KDE 3. Probably this year I'll switch to KDE 4.

@hirvinen I moved from KDE3 to Gnome, mainly because attracted by the elegance of Linux Mint. Now I feel quite comfortable under Gnome environment. Anyway, it's by far a matter of personal valuations, I guess. At any rate, for now, including Win XP and Mac OS, Gnome is the DE in which I can be more productive ...

@samposm To me it seems the Techrepublic article complaints only about bad default settings and taskbar choices and some (old and new) minor problems and the memory usage meter is too unacurate to really prove anything. After KDE 4.2 all my personal complaints about KDE 4 vanished (YMMV). I still use KDE 4 a lot like KDE 3.5.9. It doesn't enforce to change your habits. You just have to make some configurations again, but no harm there:)

The worst thing about KDE 4 was the release of 4.0. That made things look a lot like Vista release. Unfortunately. Maybe KDE project should release 4.3 as 5.0 to clean the table like MS does with Windows 7?

@trm switched to LXDE yesterday. It is lightning fast on my older lenovo! No going back to KDE or Gnome.
