Like Nikki Timmermans before, also Johan Oomen makes a comment on 20 hours of video being uploaded on YouTube every minute.

Archives grow faster and faster.

And people expect them to be online.

Furthermore, the use of archive material (digital collections) is increasing.

Waisda? is a video labeling game based on collaborative video watching and tagging. It helps to collect metadata.

NAVA is a Hungarian media archive which enables collecting, preserving and processing material.

Zsofi presents a project they had before Christmas last year, NAVA tried to demonstrate that opening up collections can be more fruitful than just maintaining the collection. NAVA released 77 hungarian films, news reels, programs etc. as a gift to the public

Zsófia poses the question of possible business models for archives.

At the moment NAVA funds their activities through online advertisement.

Seija Aunila presents the living archive of YLE: http://yle.fi/elavaarkisto/.

jennaemilia

Living archive is YLE's "evening newspaper" – it reacts to daily news events through related videos.

Discussion.

jennaemilia commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

jennaemilia

Arto: Digitalisation takes the focus of copyright questions from ownership to usership and from local to global.

jennaemilia

Question from the audience: How to calculate the price of different contributions in remixed material?

jennaemilia commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

jennaemilia

Seeing something that was shown on television in another country is the beauty of YouTube. How should archives react to this?

jennaemilia commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

jennaemilia

Johan Oomen: Maybe they can show it in better quality or add better metadata to it.

jennaemilia commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

jennaemilia

Johnny Durham (http://www.youtube.com/user/JohnnyDurham19), in the audience, is asked how he feels about someone re-using his video material. The answer is that it's ok as long as he is asked first and credited after.

Eszter B from the audience disagrees with Arto, and as an author says that reputation economy is important for authors, and has been for her - she gets invitations to give talks and fame, and more people are getting familiar with her work

Seija from YLE: "why are we doing this archiving, because everything is already in YouTube"?

SannaM commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

SannaM

Johan O (Sound & Vision) can come up million reasons; he does not see YouTube as a threat, rather archives should ask themselves what are we good at? Locality, metadata.. etc.

Teemul

ähh... my connection in the hotel lobby is not fast enough for the stream. I hope the clips will be online soon and also archived to the http://www.archive.org/.

Teemul commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

SannaM

@Teemul: yes, clips will be made available online at least on the symposium website http://p2p-fusion.org/emerging/

SannaM commented on posted to #seminaarikannu 28.05.2009 (fi)

jennaemilia

Hopefully we can first get to know people's interests and practices and after that come up with new models for copyright and archiving.
