Amy Bruckman, Cliff Lampe, Andrew Brooks, Karrie Kahalios

Amy:
- hard to do Facebook research, that complies with terms of service, most Facebook apps dont obey them

Andrew:
- participants, review boards, terms of service the 3 things
- participants: awareness, informed consent , public vs. private(contextual consent?)
- review boards: academic/institutional; corporate - it's not level...
- ToS: compliance, changes, copyright & ownership

Cliff Lampe
- issues legal vs. ethical (rarely an intersection)
- ethical responsibilities to GROUPS rather than individual? (potential damage to groups, not individuals)
- harm to existing communities,
(everything2.com - changes to voting system would've destroyed)
- harms in making new communities
(Great Lakes Echo - e.g. student journalism, site for study etc. , eventually site runs out, users may not know. this)

Karrie Karahalios
- scared of people on FB etc. becoming numbers, obejcts
- familymembers, friends, etc. can become subjects of study without knowing it
(e.g. network analysis)

hmm. wonder how this all is in Finland? Europe?

Thought Cliff Lampe 's view on not just individuals but communities in research ethics was a good starter for thinking.

comment from industry: lots of worries: privacy, caching, identity, are research apps safe, etc.

what about "network citizens", laws tend to be US laws...

it's a whole big mess...

Q: what could be a research where you could "just screw it" with the ToS?
A: e.g. is Iran study ok? Yes?

one person claims that ToC has nothing to do with research...hmm...

Q: what if there is an "ok" set of consented data? Is it ok to reuse it?
