Please present here questions and discussion themes for the panel.

One of the questions lingering in my mind is connected to the myth of the "active user" in the sense of active participation and producing of information. If we gather material based on people's production, what are our real ways of finding out on those that do not explicitly produce information?

juhak commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

priio

@juhak: and especially if some users are active in e.g. sending private message in Facebook although they seem extremely passive from outside.

Interdisciplinary nature of social media: Do you need to learn the methods of other fields as well or are you allowed to study social media from the perspective of your own field? Does it make any sense? Or are multidisciplinary research teams needed in order to do any research about social media?

Jaakko Suominen mentioned the "seeking and wandering": is it (mainly) a negative phenomenon in research? We in #somus project tend to call it openness, inclusiveness and agility and think it as beneficial for research - while of course acknowledging also the negative (time-taking, unfocusing, ...) side of it. :)

Isn't there a problem in using FB for research notes inside the research team? What about privacy of the data, do you trust on FB?

priio commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

juhak

Do you know of any research, which would deeply study the "extreme click-users", such as those that are very active in posting in facebook and other public forums?

juhak commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

Question to Jaakko:
You mentioned in your talk about using social media for coordinating research work and communicating about research issues. There are a lot of different values embedded in these technologies, such as openness of information. Your group is private, but do you think these values might otherwise have an effect in the research practices of your group?

juhak commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

juhak

@priio Exactly. Lisbeth mentioned one method of interviewing and observing use in situ.

Social media is social. Is it possible to study it without taking the social connections into consideration? Social network analysis may provide some background data for understanding content and usage, but still you cannot see, what the people mean personally to each others.

I see we have some new users @oirrmann and @critic - plese comment to the end of this thread - so that others can see you!

awiklund

Is it time to create a new research methodology and ideology for doing research involving social media on different levels (the three points mentioned by Jaakko). Can anyone suggest literature related to this - or is this kind of literature yet to be written?

awiklund commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

pe3

@awiklund: good point - and lets collect literature to this etherpad

oirrmann

The common author issue raised by Juha is an interesting one. In mathematics the author Nicolas Bourbaki was actually a group that collaborated.

oirrmann commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

oirrmann

What are actually the issues we are talking about?
- Collaborating
- Socializing
- Communicating
- Co-creating
IF we mingle them all together, we lose the focus. What is the take of the presenters around this issue?

oirrmann commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

oirrmann

I am raising my hand now.

Minna: for understanding the elderly we're researching, need to also involve all people around, for interpreting and helping understand. Makes sense, of course!

Lisbeth: elderly people may be concerned about privacy issues,

in Denmark elderly people are a rising field of research

15 years old teenager thinks that 20 years old already belongs to elderly people.

ConnectIrmeli

Jaakko: We need a richer, more diverse (research) approach than speaking about "the elderly"

-In which ways is social media used for memorizing things by / within different user groups?

ConnectIrmeli commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

matildasmeds

What do we mean by elderly people? Diverse group with different values, skills, expectations, life situations

pe3

How do we address the problem of social media being hard to define.

pe3 commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

visualradio

@pe3 @troppone Guys, are you talking about me? (elderly people) ;) I think there is a sleeping potential in the society. A "Gender-blender machine" should / could be invented. The #Mikroduuni and #Seniorinetti discussion in Qaiku are both opening virtual paths towards the genderblender "machine" (Sopimuskone is an innovation topic) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender

AKS

How we should research images and pictures in social media? Images and ethics, rights, methods?

AKS commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

Lisbeth: another blindspot in social media research is not realizing the differences in different social media services/software.

pe3 commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

troppone

Hmm, interesting, is it really so that the differences in SoMe services are not noticed in research?

troppone commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

awiklund

I'm so happy to hear Jaakko say that about formulating ideas as if writing for social media outlets such as FB and blogs. What a relief :-)

awiklund commented on posted to #someme 31.08.2010 (en)

priio

Jaakko's point is so true: the use of social software affects also what and how you are using.

Jaakko: have I gone too far? Formulating thinking and self reflection as Facebook updates and blog posts.

I recommend to watch South Park episode about Facebook. It is hilarious and also raises some important questions. Not very scientific though ;P.

I don't know too much about elderly people - I'm just 70 - and try to synchronize all my mobile qaikus, video streamings, tweets, fb friends... with help of some social media research - as online as possible.

I have heard there is also one (SP episode) about world of warcraft. Haven't seen that yet.

Minna: one way to address the ambiguity of social media: don't use abstract terms but use terms like Facebook updates.

I see Jaakko's example of how social media tools / methods formulate our thinking / problem solving as a huge advantage developing as an automatic side product when learning social networking. It for sure differs from our current / traditional (organizational) communication in a very positive way.

@pia ...and then there's of course The Facebook Song :D

Minna Isomursu: Should(n't) we in each research paper write a chapter on ethics on researching that particular piece of social media.

Thank you! Great seminar!

The openness is difficult - I remember at CSCW hearing about a case where the researchers tried to be open on IRC - they always got booted out of the channel :D

The workshop is not streamed but the somus etherpad (the memos to be created realtime during the workshops) links can be found here http://www.visci.fi/2010/workshop-gro...

so welcome to follow and chat!
