I'm guessing Ubuntu will still have to put out CDs every year or so and maybe ISOs twice a year? http://bit.ly/dGgHDg

I was thinking about trying Ubuntu on the new laptop I am getting for Christmas. Is it any good?

I think it's very good. It was my first Linux system and it was a very good choice, though if you want something multimedia read you might want to look at Linux Mint. They include a lot more by default. So you can play mp3s and use flash etc right out of the box

Apparently Ubuntu isn't moving to rolling releases after all. I guess the QA infrastructure wouldn't be quite up to that yet anyway http://theravingrick.blogspot.com/2010/11/ubuntu-i...

Yeah I noticed that, @bergie. It's shame. I really liked that idea in principle and I haven't liked a lot of the moves Canonical have made lately, to the extent I've moved to Fedora, but I think a rolling release would have brought me back into the fold. I like Wayland so maybe that will tempt me back. I want to come back to Ubuntu. It was my first distro, but it's gone very Maccy and that doesn't suit me. I know it's supposed to be the most usable system and all that but it just feels like misplaced buttons to me :)

@silner if I understood correctly, Fedora and MeeGo are also looking at using Wayland, not just Ubuntu

I didn't notice that. I suppose I may as well stay with Fedora then :)
