Tarkoittaa sitä että Google Docs ja kumppanit alkaa toimimaan paljon heikommin IE6:lla kuin muilla.

On jo aikakin että joku iso toimija lopettaa IE6-tuen. On käsittämätöntä kuinka paljon rahaa jokainen web-toimija joutuu tuon kurjimuksen tukemiseen käyttämään.

Suuri osa selaintestauksiin käytettävästä ajasta tuhrautuu kutoseen. Säästyisi web-toimijoiden aika, hermot ja asiakkaan rahat jos lopetettaisiin IE6:n tukeminen. Ei vaan taida onnistua ihan vielä.

Googlelta tulleen mailin mukaan myös Gmail ja Google Calendar ovat menossa 2010 aikana pois IE6-käyttäjiltä.

ReadWriteWeb: Consider the number of Web sites that have required major time-wasting workarounds. How many? 200,000? 300,000 at a very conservative estimate? Say it took a developer two hours to get each site to work properly. That's 600,000 lost hours... or more than 1,643 years. And at an average life span of 67 years, that's... 25 lifetimes.

Now, if corporations can have the same rights as people, then surely abstract life-equivalent calculations can, too. Internet Explorer 6, you're under citizen's arrest for murder. That's right, murder. 25 counts.

Gizmodo: And IE6 is the bastard child of this hubris. It doesn't behave like any other browser on the market because it doesn't interpret Cascading Style Sheets or JavaScript according to the universal standards set by organizations like the W3C. I've heard of developers spending anywhere between 20% and 50% of their time on a project making a site work in Internet Explorer 6. I know of many others who simply chop out advanced features, enhanced interactivity and slick design elements altogether, just so their work doesn't "break" in IE6.

Making matters worse, Internet Explorer 6 is deeply embedded in the infrastructures of countless corporations worldwide. Back when IE6 was the only game in town, businesses invested in Intranets and browser-based apps that functioned only in IE. Why bother with anything else? Five years later, of course, a lot of businesses learned the hard way that "IE-only" actually meant "IE6-only." Oops.

Toisaalta, positiivinen ihminen toteaisi, että tällähän on työllistävä vaikutus! Eli Korporaatio on taas työllistänyt ihmisiä 25 elämän edestä. Missä lie katuojassa olisivat nekin devaajat ilman yhteiskunnallisen vastuunsa kantavaa Korporaatiota?

Myös Microsoft itse suosittelee vahvasti IE6:sta luopumista. En löytänyt faktaa, mutta näin olen kuullut, että eivät enää itsekään sitä halua tukea.

@ekurvine toki IE6-virittely työllistää. Vaan jos IE6:n tukemisen tarve ei hidastaisi webin kehitystä, olisiko sillä suurempi työllistävä vaikutus?

Microsoftin support-sivulla esim. XP Home SP2:lla IE6-tuki loppuu 13.7.2010. Kaipa niillä riittää hommaa ie7, ie8:n ja ie9:n teossa, että jos yhden saavat pois niin vähän vähemmän tekemistä ;)

@bergie Ihan kuin MS olisi tekemässä ensimmäistä käyttökelpoista selainversiotaan. Elleivät päädy tälläkin kertaa poistamaan luvattuja ominaisuuksia "aikataulusyistä".
