free WiFi on Helsinki-Vantaa means that almost everyone sits with an open laptop. What services would all these travellers need?

Good, very good question.

Beer. Travel guides. A service preventing them from reading email because it is a wasteful legacy service. Qaiku. Departures and arrivals on screen. Weather information. News from both ends.

Couple of ideas:

  • Recommendation service that would find local events and sights, and then show the ones that are interesting to the user
  • A truly offline RSS and Read This Later reader, updating when you have connectivity and caching even images and YouTube videos to be handled on the flight

Both of these would be interesting Midgard apps to hack for the N900

Also, a good mobile interface to matka.fi for planning your trip onwards (we really need Europe/world -wide public transport route planners!)

@bergie Have you ever seen a good RSS reader?

@ferrix Google Reader is quite good, but it could do a lot more to lift the interesting posts from cruft and to show the discussion related to an item (comments, referring blog posts, Qaikus)

@bergie The differences are mostly in the way they render the XML 1:1 into text :)

Recommendation service for local events ... how many of arriving passengers are using wifi? My guess is that they're hunting for their bags or taxi or finding out about public transport.

Maybe some kind of "Welcome to the airport, let us walk you through the arrival" service that tells when and where the bags will arrive so that you don't have to stand next to an empty conveyor belt but instead have a cup of coffee. And a service that handles the transport for you. Just walk to your taxi. Maybe have driver meet you in the lobby. Or relax while waiting for your bus.

For leaving passengers: fill your device with in-flight entertainment. Latest news (own and destination), video, games, music, podcasts. URL for the destination walk-through service :-) Something to do while bored. Special offers of airport shops (now you have time for browsing the shops). Twitter updates for my flight ("just follow @AY925").

@samikki yep, the "where and when" of luggage arrival and transportation to city is a relevant question. Almost every time there'd be time for a cup of coffee either while waiting at the conveyor belt or the railway/bus station
