Ordered extra 4GB of RAM for my work desktop. Let's see if it helps...

Actually running XP still but downloading and extracting 25GB envs almost daily in my new job required some kind of upgrade (maching upgrade is out of budget...)

does the extra RAM help that much? i would have thought Disk I/O is a bigger part of that?

Does XP even support more than 4GB?

i could be wrong, but are zip files loaded to memory for unzipping? if there's not enough memory then you'd need to swap... we have many zip files around 1GB in size and even some between 1-2GB. anyway, more RAM can't hurt right? :)

Murphy law applied to PCs: RAM is never too much

not sure about the loading into ram bit, i guess it depends on the software.
I do know that Winzip in a cronically dumb move fist unzips to %temp% then copies, whereas 7zip unzips "in place".

yeap, using 7zip here :D

I have the same, it helps but not that much. My ancient X31 with 1G is running smoothly Win7.
