1) Does the browser have normal (quick!) "Back" button? I absolutely don't like the way it is implemented now. I guess it would be ok, if visual-sfx would directly enhance selected screenshot, but now it just moves somewhere aside, so I have a feeling, that it's going to send me to the wrong page

2) Browser-installer interaction. When I select "Install" in the web-browser I want installer to appear, do it's job and disappear. I want to be returned to the browser. Additionally, it would be awesome, if installer could just work in background, without creating window and just notify me when it finished. It's multitasked OS after all!

3) usual USSD rant. (yes, I know it will be included in next firmware update)

4) I miss scrollbars. I really do. A lot of times I managed to click on some buttons instead of scrolling screen down, just because device isn't perfect at distinguishing clicks from holds (low sensitivity). Explicit scrollbars would solve the problem

@indeyets regarding 1), just press backspace.

5) I want distinct controls for ui-language and locale-settings (formats of numbers, dates, etc.).

6) "Contacts" application would benefit from explicit search-field (or "search" button). I know I can just start typing on hardware keyboard, but… but hardware keyboard is limited to the single language (going to settings each time when I want to switch the language is hardly an option). So, I want to use "virtual" keyboard, but I can't. So, now I have to do the following:

a. open hardware keyboard
b. type any letter (search-field appears)
c. close hardware keyboard
d. click search-field with stylus

That's painful (especially when you need to merge 50+ contacts)

7) Virtual keyboard needs to be updated to the current expectations. iPhone OS and Android do it much better. These should be implemented:

a. Holding the button should display popup with similar letters (umlauted variants for o/u/…, ellipsis for dot, short and long dashes for minus, etc.)
b. context-oriented layouts (for urls, for emails, for math, …)

8) Optional portrait-mode is needed for as much apps as possible.

7a and 7b might be patented, as well as other things...

silpol commented on 28.01.2010 (en)

silpol

mind you, whole UI has a lot of tradeoff's here and there just because we avoided situations "between patents and open source license, like rock and hard place"

would it be too rude to remind you about one URL you know for sure https://bugs.maemo.org/ ? ;)

silpol commented on 28.01.2010 (en)

@silpol with some of these things, Maemo Brainstorm is even better address

@silpol I will proceed there as soon as I finish with the list. for now it's "to be continued…" :)

@silpol and regarding patents… I thought finland doesn't have a concept of software patents. a lot of Android-based devices are manufactured as "US version" (with crippled functionality) and "European version" (which has full functionality)

@indeyets well, unfortunately we still may not ignore US market (where we could be bit by Apple severily), and having two vastly different UI's for two markets could be too expensive exercise...

@indeyets -- HW keyboard supports up to 8 states per each button. Languages are switched with Sym+Space.

abbra commented on 29.01.2010 (en)

indeyets

@abbra I got some really strange effects when trying this sometimes (like seeing 2 letters printer on each key-press), other times there's no effect. I wonder if I do it right…

Hardware layout is set to: Suomi, Svenska (that's the one I have)
I've set up 2 languages: English (USA) and Русский (Россия)

I start Notes application and start to type: see latin letters. I press "blue arrow" button, and then simulatenously press Sym/Ctrl and Space. Start to type again: see latin letters again

indeyets commented on 30.01.2010 (en)

abbra

Why do you need to press blue arrow? Press Ctrl-and-then-Space, release them. Notification should come up that you have switched languages.

There was a bug that you have to start typing in latin at least one letter and then switch to Russian.

abbra commented on 30.01.2010 (en)

indeyets

@abbra you told to use "Sym". and Sym = blue-arrow + Ctrl ;)

anyway. I see notification, but it doesn't actually switch languages for me

indeyets commented on 30.01.2010 (en)

abbra

Nope, blue-arrow is a button below the Sym/Ctrl. I have English keyboard and set russian/english as two languages and everything works fine for me.

abbra commented on 30.01.2010 (en)

indeyets

@abbra works for me only if I set hardware layout to russian. weird
